Did you do your Summer Reading?

TALL TALES
Throughout history people have told and written stories about their heroes. A tall tale is a special kind of hero story because the heroes of tall tales are 'larger than life'. They are bigger or stronger than real people, even when the tall tale is based on a real person. Tall tale heroes solve problems in funny ways that are hard to believe. How many times did you read a 'larger than life' part in Steven Kellogg's books? 'larger than life' means an exaggeration. Get ready because we will be writing our own 'larger than life' TALL TALES when we get back to school!

1st Day School Supplies

Please send in:
* empty shoebox
* paper towel roll
* 2 marble composition books (pictured)
* one homework folder
* color pencils
* pencils
* erasers
See you on September 2nd

Summer Reading

To my former third graders: I hope everyone is reading their summer reading book.

To my future third graders: While reading your Steven Kellogg's Tall Tales look for times he uses exaggeration. If you don't know what exaggeration means look it up in a dictionary.

09-10 School Year

To my future third graders: If you take a summer vacation, near or far, get a postcard to bring to school. Our first story is called "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" and we want to know how you did, too! Don't forget to read some of Steven Kellogg's Tall Tales. While reading look for exaggerations (where the author is stretching the truth). We will be writing our own vacation tall tale when we get back to school. Enjoy your summer, Mrs. Paola

Have a cool summer!

Thank you boys and girls for a great year. You worked very hard. In your summer reading packet I put a Rita's Ice gift card for you. Take time to visit the library or go to a book store- just READ! Maybe you can do a book swap with some friends. Please return the reading book I gave you and your poster on the first day of school. Have fun with the project. Enjoy your summer. Maybe I'll see you around town. Love, Mrs. Paola

BIRD BEAK Project

We have been studying many different wetland birds and how they use "their" odd beaks to hunt, eat, build homes and survive. The beaks act like common household tools or utensils we use to help us in life everyday. Such as tongs, strainers, chisels, straws, spoons, forks, scissors, ladle, comb, tweezers, etc...

Students- create your bird with objects found around your house, but focus on the beak. Try to use recycled plastic jugs, old tennis balls, paper mache, felt pieces, feathers, clay, paper towel rolls-anything goes. Be creative but accurate!

If your bird is large just create the head and beak or scale down your model (1 foot=1 inch). Some students asked to make the bird in their natural habitat(diorama). I say, "Go for it!" Have Fun!

The projects will be displayed on Ocean Night Thursday, June 11th.

Upcoming dates

Monday, June 1st Wetland Walk to Oxford Lake 11:00-2:00. Check out the note and sign the permission slip in the Friday Folder. Sorry for the short notice, but the weather for Monday looks perfect and our "Crocodile Hunter", Mr. Hibbitt, is available. All parents are welcome to join us for some or all of this cool adventure. Meet us at the school by 11:00 or drive to the lake by 11:15ish. Bring a lunch for yourself, too. We will return to the school by 2:00.

Friday, June 5th Tie Dye shirts for field day. Bring in a PREWASHED new or old t-shirt or tank top on/or before Friday.
